Two further "issues" common in Europe & no doubt in the US as well. . . DPF & DMF.
DPF - diesel particulate filter. These need to regenerate at regular intervals to maintain their efficiency; on vehicles which are doing a lot of short trips & town driving they can become clogged & need replacing after 20-30,000 miles at a cost of $1,000-plus.
DMF - dual-mass flywheel. To damp out transmission vibrations a lot of diesels use a DMF which, as its name suggests, is made up of two parts rather than the one of a normal flywheel. High failure rates & an expensive repair. (Not, of course, a problem with an automatic)
