Window Switch

All '09 and others are being recalled because of possible fire hazard to the power window switch on the driver side. Of course, no charge for the work.

There is probably only a small chance of a problem actually occurring, Larry but, if your car is on the list, get it in and have it checked as soon as you can. Far better to be safe than sorry.

Ken, due to a medical reason involving double vision and dizziness, I had to postpone driving the car approximately 10, 12 miles to the Toyota dealership. and I am thinking that as long as I keep NOT opening the window, I can be safe from a possible fire occurring there, can't I ?

Without knowing the precise circuitry of the switch I can't say for sure, Larry. I would guess the chance of fire is very small anyway but suggest you advise the dealer that you will take the car in when you are able to drive safely again. In the meantime, as you asked, I would suggest you do not use the window(s), just use the A/C to keep the car comfy inside.

I have some info for you, Larry;

'The Power Window Master Switch in the involved vehicles may have been manufactured with insufficient lubricant grease. If not enough grease is applied, under certain conditions the switch may develop a short circuit that can cause the switch assembly to overheat and melt. A melting switch can produce smoke and potentially lead to a fire.

Toyota previously recalled certain 2007-2009 model year vehicles for a similar condition. This Safety Recall adds vehicles not previously involved in the prior action that utilized an alternative lubricant application method.

Owners of the involved vehicles will be notified by first class mail. Toyota dealers will inspect the switch and apply heat-resistant grease. If the switch is not operating normally, an internal circuit board will be replaced.'


So, if I read the recall correctly, you are safe if you don't use the power windows. Live long and prosper!

Yes Ken It does involve my 2009 Camry. Toyota sent me notification regarding this recall, explaining in detail what might happen unless a particular and special grease is applied to the switch assembly. It only applies to the driver side switch.
