DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group unit will recall 832,500 of its 2002 to 2006 Jeep Liberty sport-utility vehicles, citing a defective front suspension lower ball joint.

The Stuttgart, Germany, automobile maker said in some cases the joint takes excessive strain that, if it goes on long enough, can result in a loss of steering control.

The company will replace the front suspension lower ball joint on affected vehicles for free starting in September.

DaimlerChrysler's shares closed down 61 cents, or 1.2%, Wednesday at $51.04.
