The "bible" of trafiic safety engineering

Anyone interested in understanding how speed limits and other traffic control devices ought to be set up should review the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; info available here:

    http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov

Sadly, many state/local governments routinely ignore the principles set forth in MUTCD, especially as regards posting speed limits. This is the root cause of much of the corruption that pervades traffic enforcement in this country.

If you familiarize yourself with MUTCD, you will understand what's going on...

Very good information, Eric. If the public knew what the guidelines are, they could hold the Department of Transportation (DOT) to following it. Often traffic lights and STOP signs are posted due to politics and not for safety.

Another good website would be the National Motorists Association's (NMA) new Blog
