The difference between todays cars and those 30-40 years ago are tremendous. Just about every item on my 2001 Saturn L100 save for wiper blades, oil and air filters are a "dealer item." That wasn't true of cars built up to the middle 1990s. In addition, cars built during the 1970s, although they had crappy engines, were heavy, like todays cars, and unlike todays cars, were over engineered. That meant that domponents such as rear end gears, suspension parts, and even steering gears would last a very long time. With engineers designing for bean counters whims and "optimization", its only going to get tougher to keep and/or restore a vehicle built today.They have refined planned obselecence to a precise science. Its no longer about tailfins and headlights....
