    How High IS The Sky?

Park Service inanity: they won't tell us how old the Grand Canyon is
    By Don Hazen

According to Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) in a report released this week [PDF], Grand Canyon National Park is not permitted to give an official estimate of the geologic age of its principal feature, due to pressure from Bush administration appointees.

Furthermore, a book approved by the Service claiming the Grand Canyon was created by Noah's flood ,rather than by geologic forces, is on sale in the park for more than three years, even though a review was promised to Congress and the press. A Freedom of Information request [PDF] reveals that no review has ever been requested, nor taken place.

"In order to avoid offending religious fundamentalists, our National Park Service is under orders to suspend its belief in geology," stated PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch. "It is disconcerting that the official position of a national park as to the geologic age of the Grand Canyon is 'no comment.'" PEER urged [PDF] the new Director of the National Park Service (NPS), Mary Bomar, to end the stalling tactics, remove the book from sale at the park and allow park interpretive rangers to honestly answer questions from the public about the geologic age of the Grand Canyon.

Hard to believe... where is Richard Dawkins when we need him?

    You are joking, aren't you?

When we were in Dinosaur National Monument in Utah / Colorado about 20 years ago, in the museum several facts were explained. They often went into the scientific facts of evolution in their explanations. No mention of Mormon nonsense at all and this was in Utah!

I did wonder how often a Mormon would tell them that they are full of it, but it didn't happen while we were there.

That's pretty bad if they want park officials to lie about facts just to keep superstitious people happy in their dreamworld.

I can't believe such nonsense can happen here. What a bunch of Bushsh*t. But I don't think we have to worry. What will happen next is some other religion will claim it was not Noah's Ark but some other type of silly nonsense. One nice thing about freedom of religious nonsense is one religion is often fighting against the nonsense beliefs of another religion.

Haven't you heard? Geological age/erosion, etc. is just "another theory" of the Canyon's origin - no more or less valid than the "theory" of Noah and the flood...

Geological age/erosion, etc. might only be theory, but Noah and the flood story does NOT qualify as even being theory. Such nonsense only qualifies as silly childish superstitious nonsense.

Calculate it out-- 4000 feet deep at that new walkway-- all done in 5000 years-- that's damn near a foot a year-- How many years will it take to get it far enough below sea level to cause the sea water to back up into it?

Eric, with you, of course. But if Gail said the exact same nonsense, she would be serious.

If you believe that, there's a space ship called Battle Star Galactica that is giving away rides for the new year!
