Might have been true in America in 1776-96.

Seems to me that is true only so long as people have power, and Mao said it came out the barrel of a gun, so it's really a bit simplistic to say that arming people makes them free.

Freedom is IN MY HUMBLE OPIINION the room to achieve potential... and that it what civilisation is all. about, and best expressed in music and art. I find most else to be something of a game.

Also, Colleen, I want to apologise for offence given when I supported verbal abuse against nuking the Middle East. I will disagree with anyone who advocates nukes as a solution to essentiallly social religious and political problems, because the ultimate effect is everyone loses.

I will disagree with anyone who advocates nukes as a solution to essentiallly social religious and political problems, because the ultimate effect is everyone loses.

I think that many people out of frustration suggest "nuking" more in a form of joking to release the tensions.

I don't think anyone really wants to nuke any nation, knowing that the finger is on the button in every country that has nuclear weapons, and I believe that any nation that chooses to nuke another nation will find that they have just condemned their nation to a nuclear attack. But there seems to be alot of "bravado" going on.

Freedom is IN MY HUMBLE OPIINION the room to achieve potential... and that it what civilisation is all. about, and best expressed in music and art. I find most else to be something of a game.

Freedom in MY HUMBLE OPINION is the result of taking freedom away from another person. The "freedom" to say something that I don't want to hear. The "freedom" to be financially independant means that I am taking someone's money. The "freedom" to religion means I have to accept all religions whether I believe it or not. The "freedom" to achieve potential is very vague and a concept that I really can't grasp in that someone suffers if I attain my potential.

Financial independence does not mean 'taking' money. Money is just a piece of paper representing value, which is freely traded.

Religious independence is fine, so long as you can endure preachers.

I would argue for religious tolerance and fair exchange of value. Beyond that, it's mostly dressing.

And guns are only relevant in war, not in civilised society.

Our Robbie has been complaining of an unpleasant, resonating sound in his new car, a sound that is apparent only in the 60 to 70 mph range, a mysterious sound. I thought that you might have sent it to encourage him to behave.

You mean like the investors who lost their money yesterday on the NYSE. I gladly took their money when I shorted

    Ah.

Funny you should mention that, Johann. Because today the noise was removed, fixed, banished. It took great cunning and subtlety. GM got the last laugh because the faulty front hub cannot be disassembled and has to be replaced as a complete unit [$NZ450... ding-of-cash-register] [my old Jags had $12 rollers]
And it took a skilled man with a stethescope to diagnose it...

More worrying was the fact that the guy who removed the old hub and installed a new one is the same kid who at about 16 yrs-old was quite ham-fisted but keen, and now at 23-or-so yrs-old is a better mechanic than I ever was. His employer, the engine-building friend made the diagnosis. I read magazines and drank weak black coffee....

A nice thing about it was that I just turned up outside their workshop unbooked at 7.50am and they fitted the whole job into their day without complaint [to me anyway]. I put this down to the postive discrimination offered to cripples. Which may be mandated these days.... certainly ought to be.

My Canadian wheelchairbound friend found positive discrimination too when visiting me in Noosa a few years back. His chair had a flat and so we took it to the bike shop for repairs. Next morning it was flat again so we took it back....They put a new tyre on ....no charge.

Amazing for me was that walking street of Noosa with him I became so more conscious of the footpaths and street crossings. I made a note of them and advised the council ...within 2 months they were wheel chair friendly
