    Car for my mom?

Mom's 7 year old Maxima is making expensive engine sounds, so it's time for her to get a new car.

She's thinking of leasing, because her milage is so low (9000 miles a year), she'll be able to sell the Maxima for ~$7500 (two years lease payments) and she figures the car would probably outlast her anyway.

She's absolutely ruled out a Civic or Corolla because "They're old-people cars". She'd like a station wagon to make it easier to carry golf clubs, but it doesn't seem that there are any cheap wagons any more -- they've morphed into SUVs.

So I've suggested a new CR-V, the Toyota Camry & Avalon (too big to fit in their garage, but anyway...), the Saturn Aura, and the Ford Fusion.

    Any other ideas?

For a station wagon, I can think of none better than a Dodge Magnum, although it is not exactly a feminine car.

I also like the Saturn Aura as wel. The base model is somewhat affordable and rides and drives great. I am partial to the interior as well, as it is very well executed.

I also like the looks of the Chevy Impala.

If she's going to lease, however, it may be better to look at a Honda Accord, a Toyota Camry, or a Nissan Altima as they probably have better residuals.

The Avalon is a wonderful "modern boat" in the finest tradition of Buick - just better-built! Lots of room; really nice cruisermobile. KInd of ungainly-looking, though - but that is a subjective.

You might look at the Hyundai Sonata or Elantra; also very nice cars - with great warranties and excellent scores in terms of consumer satisfaction, reliability, etc.

And I bet you could score a great deal on any Ford; the Five Hundred is worth a look; it gets slammed for not having great power or stunning looks, but it is a very solid, comfortable (if somewhat drab) vehicle with good interior and trunk space, etc.

One of her criteria is "No Ford Taurus", so the Five Hundred is out.

The Altima would be a good choice, as they've really improved it.

Something that she may want to consider is a 3-series, since she's leasing

(negotiated price - residual) / number of months

means that luxury cars may not be out of the question.

On the 3-Series: Make sure she drives it for at least an hour before doing anything; the suspension's pretty firm. Great for enthusiast types; not so great for typical moms! Also, it's RWD - and absolutely sucks in snow - if that's an issue for you....

Wagon? How about the non-WRX version of the Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon?
