A terrific acheivement by the French.

Now if we could only build such a line (the train is easy, getting the property rights to build a high speed line without any grade-level crossings is hard)

I rather like the French engineer's comment...

"?We saw the countryside go by a little faster than we did during the tests,? said engineer Eric Pieczac.

I have actually ridden the TGV from Paris to Annecy. Seems to me that it had to back slowly from Lyon to Annecy, but I may be entirely incorrect about that.

A little like the Concorde, which used to fly into NYC from France at supersonic speeds, but which then proceeded on to DFW at subsonic speeds.

The Concorde proceeded everywhere over land at subsonic speeds, public relations, lawsuits, and air traffic control were some of the reasons.

My wife & I rode it from Geneva to Paris and then from Paris to Calais---
We also had a very interesting trip across the Channel on the hovercraft.

We did, too. Don't think it's in business any more.

The day we went, the wx was bad-- we were the last trip out that day and the swells were enormous-- the thing would climb the top of a swell and then dive under the next one-- 3 cars broke loose and everyone was tossing their cookies-- I was having a blast --like riding a rough rollercoaster-- I thought my wife was going to have a heart attack-- she get deathly scared on planes and boats are out of the question. This ride convinvced her that a combination of both was definitely a total disaster!

When I lived in London and in Paris I used the hovercraft a number of times. THe worst journey was my last ......It too fell off swells.......Onlything I lost was my Scotch on ice...the guy behind wore it ...flew out of my hand. I had given a French hitch hiker a lift from Paris......originally I was going to drop him at Dunkirque so he could ride in a truck...but He came for free on the hovercraft... 5 pax were allowed per car for no extra charge

The Chunnel trains have taken over the passenger volume formerly owned by hovercraft, one supposes.

More than likely, but the Hovercraft was a real experience! A train is usually just another train!

A few indeed......... I still keep in contact with the guy and base myself at his home when I visit London.

He ended up in the flat I lived in.... and had a great record collection courtesy Sir Richard.

Back to the origin of this thread:

What the French do better than most is invent and innovate. What they do worst is apply those inventions and innovations to real life.

For example, although Pasteur was French, it was nearly impossible to buy pasteurized milk in France until fairly recently.

Methinks you have some trouble reconciling the nature of France with your adoptive home [USA].

No problem for English-Scots-Irish. We know that everyone else is stupid, but we endure....

One innovative thing they did with Paris was to establish La Defence as a business area.... I used to praise that idea as I raced around the CBD doing courier pickups/deliveries at peak hour.
