At that time, our city's cross-town expressway was still under construction, but sections of it were open. At the eastern limit of the open expressway, it ended abruptly and funnelled traffic onto a surface street. That was the spot where the cops set their trap. I saw a motorcycle, a cop with a hand-held radar gun, and another cop who would step out into the street to flag down the victims. They had about four or five cars already stopped, lined up for processing, when I got flagged, and I was doing at least 30 over the limit. I saw that neither cop was within striking distance of the motorcycle, and there was a convenient escape path across the street from where they were pulling people over, so I slowed to fake them into thinking I was stopping, then instead of turning right to stop I floored it through the left turn down the escape path, where I was able to take a zigzag route and quickly get out of their line of sight. I never saw any evidence of a pursuit vehicle, they were probably content to just keep lining up the easy targets and take a loss on me. But I wasted no time getting to the highway and getting us out of town for the day. The passengers were dying with laughter.
I don't know that I'd ever try that again, I was worried for weeks that The Phone Call would come.
