    This is a key problem with alll the little "commuter cars" some see as a panacea... American roads/driving patterns present unique difficulties... as GM found out with the EV1, etc.

    I couldnt figure out, through all the advertisese, what kind of car was being proposed, but in general, it looks like a small, light, "commuter" car.

    American cities are laid out in a different manner, it seems, than cities where these little "commuterK" cars are used.

    I live in what I am sure is considered one of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the country(Hampton Roads). My commuting is no more (I retired in 1995), but when I did commute, for commuting, I could have used one of those little cars, as I went about 6 miles one way to and from work. I needed at most 55 mph, and it was all on city streets (yes, the Hampton Roads Parkway had a 55 mph speed limit on the part I drove on).

    But I also needed to use that car for other things. I went three times a year to a periodontist in Norfolk. That meant about a 25 mile trip on an Interstate (to use the Hampton Roads Tunnel), plus city street driving to and from the freeway. Now we're talking a 60 mile or so round trip, at Interstate speeds.

    Furthermore, I occasionally had to use that same car to go on TDY, to Quantico or Washington. That's 150 miles of highway or Interstate, one way. I believe I have just removed a "commuter" car from the equation.

    Believe it or not, I did all of that in the mid-1970s, with as close to a commuter car as I ever wish to own: a 1971 Honda 600 coupe. That's a 600cc coupe, capable of 72 mph flat out, 55 mph uphill (try doing 55 mph uphill on an Interstate with an 18 wheeler about 5 feet from your rear window! I have)

    I don't mind small cars: I have owned (in addition to that Honda) Two Fiat 600s, a Chevette Scooter, a Ford Escort, a Horizon (named "Beyond": it was blue) and a Saturn SL2. I do mind something so small it can't handlie an Interstate, or so limited in range I can't drive it 150 miles and back in one day. And I don't want to have to wait 12 hours while it gets recharged.

    Your post should be required reading for every person who either plans to bring such a car to market or believes such cars are going to work for most Americans...
