    Lincoln

What's with them changing to all three-letter names like MKX, MKZ, MKR... Isn't that just a bit too self-consciously similar to Cadillac's present naming scheme?

It's a sign of desperation - and muddled thinking. I think Lincoln made a big mistake not developing the LS sedan, which was a good vehicle and could have become an excellent one with some further work. And what they did with the Navigator (leaving it to rot for years without a major update) is borderlline criminal... . For awhile there, Lincoln was actually ahead of Cadillac.

Today, Lincoln's not even a player in the segment.

Cadillac's share of the market tanked when they went to FWD. Lincoln stll sells the heck out of their Town Car.

But, as we discussed here before, it's my opinion that the US manufacturers are making a big mistake in dropping the traditional names.

Cadillac is healthy now, however. The division began converting back to RWD several years ago and at the moment has a number of successful/competitive products. Lincoln is not even in the game. The Town Car sells mainly to fleets and very old people - and at huge discounts, too. It is a nice car that I personally like a lot (because I like big boozy American cars) but it is also very dated and not competitive with others in the luxury segment.

The LS could have been a BMW/Acura contender - had Lincoln put some more effort into it.

As for the MKZ - I'm not sure whether it's doing well or poorly. From what have been able to gather, it is not living up to expectations. Ditto the MKX and the new Navigator - which is a poor second to the Escalade. Or even the Tahoe, for that matter.

Wasn't the designer of the LS the same man who did the E36 3-series? (The one that introduced the plastic covers over the headlamps)

And you're right -- Lincoln did the usual Detroit thing of introducing a good car...and then ignoring it.

The Lincoln MKR concept looks like a 1955 Chrysler.
