    Thank you. FWIW, the "static test article" is usually the first airframe produced, before any that are to be actually flown.

    This came up in relation to an article on slashdot about the 787's new carbon-fiber wing.

    The engineers are wondering two things:
    1. Will the wing tips touch above the fuselage before failure.
    2. If they don't break before angling up above 45 degrees, is there any point in testing to failure, because by that point: the wings aren't producing much lift; and something else critical to flight has probably broken, like a tail surface.
