Any Internet Explorer experts out there (I am now using Netscape 9 to write this on the same computer) as with the IE problem.
Using IE 7, version 7.0.5730.11 with XP here on this computer at my Reno home, it will connect to my local lan stuff, but no connection to the internet. But all versions of Netscape on this same computer work fine here on the WEB.
I tried all the basic stuff, such as "repair internet connection" and all that, and it tells me I am fine, but it still does not work with Internet Explorer.
I wouldn't even worry about it, because I mainly use Netscape 9.0B2 for everything EXCEPT for one thing, where IE works best. That is to look at my cameras at the opposite home on the web. I have many cameras (inside and out) so I can look at my houses on the web from anywhere. The video server is made to use IE and doesn't work well with Netscape.
But I cannot get to anything on the web with IE. I can see my local cameras on the local IP LAN address, but cannot get anything on the WEB, not even this forum, with IE.
Everything worked fine a few weeks ago and I have no idea what I did to screw it all up.
I am using a wireless connection to a Motorola Cable Modem and D-Link wireless router. The other computer that Tom uses, works fine with all this using IE7. Seems the problem has to be in the IE 7 that's on this computer, but it works except on the internet.
Any ideas?

Well, I have it fixed, but not real sure what I did. But I think it had something to do with Norton's firewall. I just played around with everything I could think of until it worked.
I hope I didn't mess up anything else in the process, but it doesn't look like it so far.
And now I see my house in SSF is still there!

Ideas, yes; expertise, no.
Mozilla Firefox is free and, I think, a far better browse. It has a wide and excellent assortment of plug-ins for most anything you could want.
As to Norton, I ditched that years ago for being a clumsy resource hog. I have been using Trend Micro's PC-cillin suite for more than two years and am happy with it although it is a bit vague about some warnings. It's about $50 for three computers.
There are perfectly good free AV and firewall utilities out there, too.
Check the Virus Central on CIS, I'm sure that they can offer advice on all matters of security.

I usually use Netscape nine, which is much like Mozilla FF. But my camera servers need to have Active X control to display properly. With other browsers, I cannot see all the cameras at the same time. Other than that, it still works, just not as well.
All is working fine again now anyway, but thanks for the reply just the same.

AVG Free is a perfectly good freeware anti-virus, and ZoneAlarm is the de facto standard in free firewalls. I use both.
I have both Firefox and Opera installed on my system, but can find nothing about them that is compelling enough to make me stop using IE7.
I and my more literate bro use AVG... my free version requires daily updates which are OK but take a while if you leave a box alkone and unused for months.
This box unused 5 months, Margaret might use it soon.
I thought about AVG 7.5 uninstall/reinstall .
Apart from that I use Windows Defender and sometimes update WinXp.
Also use double system ID for banking and only put my credit card to a couple of big retailers.
Bought a model 1938 SouthernRailway N-class 1914 just now from England, an engine which would have run trains from Dover and other English ports in 1940-41 when the BEF went through Dunkirk, and recently declassified stuff shows 300-+ train movements at Dover in a very shortspace of time.
... the class was originally built in 1914-1915 and had a nickname I forget to do with arms production, I have DVD of examples at Reading in 1962 doing ordinary passenger trains, and I am thinking of a pic where on the Hastings line this engine is toiling upgrade while a 'Schools'-class rolls past with an evening fast train from London Victoria, but I might leave out the 'Schools'. Both are attractive engines, and in their heyday were painted in pale green lined with cream and red.
While I wrote that, AVG got to 77% through an update from January this year, although there will be trouble at mill when is installs the update files, because I am not holding my mouth right...

I knew when I had three months with no computer-issues there would be a price.
And the laptop wont't charge with any phone line via the inernal modem. Compaq 2000 or thereabouts built 2005, the tech was nervous when I asked him about the battery. Nice laptop I have run it on a tray mostly with foam underlay, the fan would come on typically after an hour and intermittently thereafter.
I think I'd rather load the settings in a new box than deal with intermittent shorts which involve the modem/phone. But it migfht just be a bit of dust my the battery..
The AVG anti-virus is free and well worth it. No, that didn't sound right. It works just fine.
The newest version of ZoneAlarm (7) is troublesome, and it conflicts with many flavors of anti-virii. Check out www.comodo.com for a free firewall that I'm using.
I haven't had any of these alleged problems with ZoneAlarm, nor has anyone I know.

While I don't use it, AVG is just fine. My anti-virus is supplied by my ISP.
I try not to look at lambs...they taste too good, but look too cute to eat.
I also just read an article about an algae from New Zealand invading New England.
That'll be our secret weapon.
Mind you, NZ was quite isolated from wicked Western diseases, plants and pests until 1850, with originally Melanesian-Asian-then Polynesia -Maori-introduced things like native rats and several carbohydrate-style root crops intoduced about 1300AD-on. If algae from here are invading NE., hmmm. Thor Heyredal was wrong wrong wrong about migration from NA or SA.
I might be wrong but before the Maori I don't think there were any mammals in the land. Vast numbers of species have been wiped out in 700 years.
Gotta admire the first Maoris who succesfully settled NZ, the prevailing navigation being sailing INTO the wind so that return was with prevailing wind. There is a faint possiblity that some humans reached NZ long before 1300AD., but they didn't survive very long.
Equally I admire the seamen and settlers from ther UK. We didn't get many mainland-Europeans, just a Dalmations and French and others who were heavily into whsat wouldf nowe be called venture capitalism, the money coming from seal skins, oil, for the burgeoning English market.
There must be some parallel with China there, but I cannot quite work it out. It doesn't involve war, yet.
I've found Defender to be an almost completely useless spyware program. With Defender running, if I did a system scan with either Spybot or Ad-Aware, either of them would find plenty of spyware and adware cookies that Defender didn't block or cull.
Yes I think that would be so. I dimly recall similar experiences. Windows defender doesn't appear to use much time or space.
But then, as with Mke I think my ISP does a lot of cleaning. I get near-zero spam, too. ISP is still dialup with a subsidiary of Aussie telco Telstra. I think I had Spybot at some stage and it found a pile of stuff Defender ignored or wasn't important. I run default settings for security [not 'hard or easy]. I tried to dowload some small file to run short video clips and Defender blocked it and said 'continue anyway?' and I chose not to. It was a Virginia-based porn siteQuite flexible, these US girls...
