What a difference 5 years makes

    Here's a 1970 Dodge Charger Commercial:

And here's a 1975 Dodge Charger Commercial (how the mighty had fallen):

    Eric,

Even more depressing is a few years in the early 1980s the Charger was a 2.2 FWD car:

The second ad compared with the first reminds me of the feminist ads for VA Slims Cigarettes - "you've come a long way, baby."

Yes, depressing, but, the new Charger is awesome!

I had one of those. Compared to what was on the market at the time, it wasn't all that bad. It got 37 MPG on the highway and 37 MPG in town (averaged over serveral hundred miles of actual use), and all that was needed was the regular oil changes. Not muscle car performance, by any stretch of the imagination, but respectable. It drove like a 6 cylinder, even with the AC running.

But when it hit 30,000 miles it became possessed. In the course of 12 months it went through 8 voltage regulators and 4 fuel pumps. It had symptoms that were never explained or cured -- all intermittent in nature. My wife finally refused to drive it. I gave up on it when I had to change a voltage regulator in the parking lot at work to get it home, and then had to replace ANOTHER fuel pump alongside the Interstate the same evening after I left work.

It's the reason my wife would have me committed if I ever were to bring home another Chrysler product...

But yes, a far far cry from a muscle car.

That story sure reminds me of a 1953 Vauxhal with the Lucas electric parts.

    Rick,

You are right those Omni 2.2 Chargers were not bad cars for their day, and they were peppy. They were just a far cry from the Chargers of yesteryear. Do you remember the magazine ads from 1982 which showed the Omni 2.2 Charger going 0-50 mph faster than a base 1982 LG4 Z28 and base 1982 LG4 Trans Am? I'll see if I can find one on the Internet.

    Eric,

I don't remember the James Earl Jones voiceover commercials.
