    Islamic Republic of Iran freedoms

You probably remember how free the President of Iran said Iranian women are:

As a minor point, this report says that sunglasses are going to be prohibited, and beards required on all men.

The same kinds of policies/practices exist in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Pakistan. And yet we are not pushing for regime change in these countries; indeed, we say nothing about such goings-on at all.

Meanwhile, Iraq under Saddam was a model of secular progressivism in contrast. High levels of literacy; widely available public education. Women allowed to exist as other than walking reproductive tracts.... but no matter.

Good point. We should have stayied out of the middle east even back in 1990. I loathe Bush 1 for that.

There is a current book out about the U.S. adventures in the Middle East...which began under our second or third President. The first permanent Navy and Army we raised were to fight in the Middle East.

Which is to say, we have a long history there, and they have a long history of barbaric and anti-social behavior.

Yes, in fact it is, according to most geographers. Just as Egypt is.

I suppose the geographers must classify Tripoli (Libya) as being somewhere but it seems to me that this amounts to an exercise in cultural geography. Then again, that may be what most of geography is all about.

Another thing that has always puzzled me is the 'Near East,' a term which has fallen into disuse.

And, at one time, the Brits called those who studied Greek, 'Orientalists.'

It's enough to bring on isolationism.

Sure looks like North Africa to me.

Is Morocco in the Mid East?

It is puzzling, isn't it? As John points out, I suspect these classifications are as much cultural as they are geographic.

I would recommend the book "Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East: 1776 to the Present."

We didn't set up bases in a meaningful region until 1990, thanks to the hanging traitor Bush 1.

We bombed Iraq incessantly from 1990 to present.
