One point I'd make is that, despite its smaller engine and lower power output, the '74 GTO was actually about as quick in the quarter mile as some of the '60s-era GTOs. This was due to its considerably lighter weight. The car had a lot of potential - and it's really a shame that Pontiac elected not to develop it further. It can be argued that the '74 GTO was a step forward - not back - as it was more like the lean/basic '64 GTO than the later (heavier/glitzier) models.
Imagine a '77-'79 GTO (same basic body as the '74) with the Trans-Am's W72 T/A 6.6 400 V-8. It would have been significantly quicker than the heavier Trans-Am and with a few minor modifications, would likely have been capable of very low 13 second second quarter mile times - which would have made it the equal of any "classic era" GTO - and then some!
