Thomas Donohue, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce chief executive, suggested in a news briefing on the group's 2008 agenda that it might endorse raising federal gasoline taxes or imposing a new carbon tax, provided the revenue would shore up U.S. transportation.

I think they first need to find out why approximately a third of the existing tax revenues from gasoline sales are not going to road & bridge repairs.

It's an outrage - on two levels. The first is the one you mention - where the heck did the third of those existing revenues go? The second is.... we already pay screw-job levels of taxation. Enough already. The god-damned Iraq debacle hemhorraging alone could rebuild the entire Interstate system to better than new.

I agree, but Demonrats are using the Iraq debacle spending to justify all sorts of new government programs that won't amount to anything.

They begin with "with the money we're spending in Iraq we could..."

1. Create a national healthcare system
2. Feed the school children.
3. Educate the school children.
4. Fund alternative fuel programs
5. Send your kids to college.
6. Provide job retraining (for what jobs.. my question)
7. Fund afterschool programs.
8. Fund a civilian peace corps.
9. Increase social security payments.
10. Fund nursing homes
11. Improve mass transit.
12. Buy windmills.

The list goes on (and on). Notice not one of these jackasses talks about doubling the mileage of the highway system.

The fact is that Bush is playing with money that we don't have.

Just because he is doing that (with his neocon vermin) doesn't justify any of the other BS spending that typical libs talk about.

I think that some of those ideas would be good if we had an economy to support it. The fact is that we don't. And we won't.

We may go into even more debt if these people get their way.
