LOL Chip!
What I dread most - and am filled with contempt toward Chimp-lovers for - is that Hildebeast will likely win in 2008. And when she assumes office, she will have at her disposal the authoritarian/despotic precedents and powers arrogated to the Executive by that squinting/smirking sack of shit. Just imagine the Patriot Act wielded by Hildebeast.Originally Posted by robmcg

Well she is transparently dedicated to the acquisition of power, as are most successful politicians. The issue goes beyond that, to some kind of US gummint and national identity.Originally Posted by Eric

Seems to me the problem in the US is the structure of Executive in relation to the houses, and the idea of a less powerful executive appeals, but that would require that the Senate and Supreme Court take some enlarged role and it all becomes very difficult. I think the first thing is to open discussion and debate about the role of the executive.
In Britain and NZ the divide between left and right is largely these days about team philosophy, not individual leaders. Behind everything is Constitutional Law ... Britain will perhaps do serious navel-gazing when Lizzie shuffles off the mortal coil, but the actual machinery is driven by the better minds in the House of Lords and in that curious thing called the British Civil Service.
The Presidential thing is a bit like electing a King... or Queen, which is a curiously American thing. I doubt any contender will change the nature of corporate management of most things...
So when vitriol is concentrated on one person, a President, it's IMHO because of some sort of national malaise... a lack of 'sense of nationhood' and GWB might have thought a foreign war was a good way to make US people feel better. Tribes, countries, pull together when under threat. Submit to arbitary command...

I'd be happy with incompetent government.
Then people would generally ignore them, and just get on with their lives.
