    Re: What were they thinking???

My guess is the same nitwit who came up with this idea was the same one who was responsible for (the Audi A8 clone) VW Phaeton:

The only silver lining in the VW mini van is a good looking minivan and the Mopar minvan is still the best selling minivan in the US. So who knows maybe the strategy will work for VW.

The nitwit who was responsible for the Phaeton was Ferdinand Piech, whose hubris reaches mammoth proportions.

BTW, when R&T and C&D tested the Phaeton they were pretty lukewarm about it, and C&D didn't rank it highly in a comparison test, but both magazines got long-term test cars, and both reported that they hated to give it back when they were done. Apparently the car grows on you.

I think the name was half the problem, and the absurd theme park/model factory.

The price was even more of an issue. I drove this car; very nice. But $70k for a VW? Are they on crack?

OK, so their minivan has a nice interior.
Which matters how much after the kids get through trashing it?

Oh, and I liked the Phaeton. But not $70k worth of like.

The minibus was much more appealing; it at least had something few minivans ever offer... personality!
