    2008 Yahama R6 breaks the 170mph barrier.

OK you 600cc speed freaks, time to change your bikes - the Yamaha 2008 YZF-R6 has become the first 600 supersports bike to crack the 170mph barrier.

At 172.34 mph, the 2008 YZF-R6 beat the next fastest bike - the Kawasaki ZX-6R by nearly 7 mph the Kwakka managing only 165.97mph with the same rider, under the same test conditions, at Bruntingthorpe proving ground.

This is, of course, actual timing equipment measured ground speed, not the speed indicated on the speedo which was probably reading about 185. With a main straight just over two miles long and a good sweeping curve leading into it Brunters allows most bikes to reach terminal velocity on a test run. I managed to reach 152mph on my old CBR6 a couple of years back and am hoping to get the chance to run my 2007 CBR6RR there sometime.
