Got to love those old muncie manual trannys, the whine sound is like music to the ears... They don't make them like this anymore:

Eric,
Actually GM laid to rest the Muncies during the 1974 model year, and during the 1974 model year GM replaced them with the BW Super T10. Your old '76 L75 LE T/A was a BW Super T10. My '79 has the same tranny and it has that whine. Haven driven both BW Super T10 and Muncie GM cars in the past both have that whine, however it's a little louder in the Muncie. When GM replaced the super T10 in 1983 with the BW T5 the tranny whine was gone for good, the T5 is ultra quiet, it even used ATF fluid instead of the standard gear lube.
Here's what the Super T10 sounds like:
Ah, yes!
Thanks for the memory jog!
It's a shame they engineered-out the sounds of the gearbox, etc. Part of the experience. Whoever doesn't like those sounds should probably be driving a Corolla anyhow!
