    There is some truth to this, I'll admit - but it's mostly the latter '70s cars that are so afflicted. Unfortunately by this time the TA had become a cartoon of its former self (with the exception of the low production 400-equipped versions like Pete's, which were fast). By 1979, most TAs were equipped with sad-sack Oldsmobile-sourced 403s (which were just bored out 350s) that made a pathetic 185 hp. Even more embarrassing were TAs equipped with 5.0 liter Chevys (and later, the even weaker Pontiac built 301).

    However, the real TAs are no more redneck cars than a 440 'Cuda or Mustang GT500. Some, like the 1973-74 SD-455 TAs and Formulas are six-figure cars. Both Pete's and my TA are worth more today than a new Camaro will be next summer. Not many rednecks in trailers with mullets can afford a $35-40k muscle car.

    The truth is today's rednecks don't drive '70s era muscle cars, period - they can't afford them. It's much more likely you'll see one behind the wheel of a thrashed mid-'80s IROC-Z... but even those are becoming less common as "country boy hoopties." The favored car today seems to be a ratted out Jap econo-box ....
