Let’s go back to cash for clunkers, what a disaster for the consumer. Having ate, slept and drank the car business for ten years, I know the cost of the car was increased by whatever the government was willing to give back in the form of a rebate. If the actual price of the car was $30,000 and the rebate was $8,000, the price of the car financed was $38,000. The government understands consumers aren’t going to get back $8,000 and then refinance the auto, they are going to spend it. Then there’s something called “gap insurance.” Gap insurance covers the difference between the actual resale value of the car and what the consumer owes on the car. You’d think this might be a big red flag to consumers, reasoning that if you need gap insurance, you’ve probably paid too much for the car. Being upside down in a car, is right up there with being upside down in a mortgage. Most consumers have no idea.

The other tragedy was car dealers couldn’t resell clean, low mileage trade ins. The government ordered these cars to be destroyed. What does this do to the used car market? It increases the cost of a used car to the consumer.

Always be suspicious of the government bearing “gifts.”

      Amen, Eileen –

The flip side is how “clunkers” jacked up the cost of a good used car for those smart enough to avoid the program (and who don’t buy new for the reasons you list).

I bought a used ’02 Nissan Frontier pick-up with 59k on the clock for $7,000 just before the program began. Today – several years later – you would have a tough time finding the exact same truck – with 80,000 miles – for less than $10k.

I bought a 2001, clean Mitsubishi with 53,000 miles on it in 2005 and paid cash for it. I’ve had it for 7 years. I mostly drive around town. Except for routine maintenance, the cost of the car has been minimal (insurance is lower, too).

          You bought smart, Eileen!

          I try to, too.

I have “fun” cars (and several bikes) but they are toys. For transpo, I buy solid used stuff – in cash, for around $7-8k or so. Keep ‘em for 15 years, sell for $3k. Net cost to me is virtually nothing.

Which leaves me money for the toys!
